HerdLens is a livestock management and counting application operated by Brightside Atlantic Limited, Ireland (“HerdLens”, “we”, “us” or “our”).

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store and protect information when you use the HerdLens mobile application, website and related services.

Information we collect

When you create and use a HerdLens account, we may process information including:

Account information

  • Your name
  • Email address
  • Account authentication information

Farm information

  • Farm names
  • County or location information that you choose to enter
  • Field names and notes
  • Farm membership and invitation information

Livestock information

  • Sheep and cattle counts
  • Livestock movements
  • Field count history
  • Notes and farmer adjustments associated with counts

Videos and images

  • Videos recorded using the HerdLens camera
  • Videos selected by you from your device
  • Processed and annotated livestock videos
  • AI-generated livestock counting results

HerdLens requests access to your device camera so that you can record livestock scans. If you choose to upload an existing video, HerdLens also requests permission to access media selected from your photo library.

HerdLens does not require microphone access for livestock scanning.

How we use information

We use your information to:

  • create and manage your HerdLens account;
  • provide livestock counting and farm-management functionality;
  • process livestock videos and generate AI-assisted counts;
  • associate counts, movements and videos with your farms and fields;
  • allow authorised farm members to share farm information;
  • manage Free, Lite and Pro plan entitlements;
  • process and verify App Store subscription status;
  • maintain, secure and improve the HerdLens service;
  • respond to support, privacy and account requests; and
  • comply with applicable legal obligations.

AI processing

Videos submitted for livestock counting may be processed using automated computer-vision systems.

The resulting count is intended to assist the farmer. Users can review and adjust a result before confirming it as a farm or field count.

Apple subscriptions

If you purchase HerdLens Lite or HerdLens Pro through the Apple App Store, Apple processes the payment.

HerdLens receives information necessary to verify the subscription and determine the appropriate account entitlement. We do not receive or store your full payment-card details.

Apple’s handling of payment information is governed by Apple’s own privacy policies and terms.

Service providers

We may use service providers to operate HerdLens, including infrastructure, hosting, video-processing and application-distribution providers.

These providers may process information only where necessary to provide their services to us and are required to protect information appropriately.

HerdLens does not sell users’ personal information.

Farm sharing

Farm owners may invite other HerdLens users to access a farm.

Where you join a shared farm, other authorised members of that farm may be able to view information associated with the shared farm, including fields, counts, livestock movements and relevant scan results.

Video retention

Video retention depends on the HerdLens plan associated with the farm:

  • Free: up to 30 days
  • Lite: up to 1 year
  • Pro: up to 3 years

Some internal or complimentary accounts may have different retention limits.

Deleting an expired or user-deleted video does not necessarily remove the confirmed livestock count or farm history created from that scan.

Other account and farm records are retained for as long as reasonably necessary to provide HerdLens, meet legal requirements and resolve legitimate business or security issues.

Legal bases for processing

Where the GDPR applies, we process personal data where necessary:

  • to provide the HerdLens service under our contract with you;
  • to comply with legal obligations;
  • for legitimate interests such as operating, securing and improving HerdLens, where those interests do not override your rights; or
  • with your consent where consent is required.

Data security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorised access, loss, alteration or disclosure.

No internet-based service can guarantee absolute security.

Your rights

Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to:

  • access personal data held about you;
  • correct inaccurate data;
  • request deletion of personal data;
  • restrict or object to certain processing;
  • receive certain information in a portable format; and
  • withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

Users in the European Economic Area also have the right to make a complaint to their relevant supervisory authority, including the Irish Data Protection Commission.

Account deletion

You may request deletion of your HerdLens account and associated personal information.

Information that we are legally required to retain may be excluded from deletion for the period required by law.

If you have an active Apple subscription, deleting your HerdLens account does not automatically cancel the subscription with Apple. You should manage or cancel your subscription through your Apple account before deleting your HerdLens account.

Children

HerdLens is intended as a farming and livestock-management service and is not directed to children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as HerdLens develops. The latest version will always be published on this page together with its last-updated date.
